Michelangelo was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect, poet, and engineer of the High Renaissance who exerted an unparalleled influence on the development of Western art. Despite making few forays beyond the arts, his versatility in the disciplines he took up was of such a high order that he is often considered a contender for the title of the archetypal Renaissance man, along with his fellow Italian Leonardo da Vinci.

Michelangelo was considered the greatest living artist in his lifetime, and ever since then he has been held to be one of the greatest artists of all time.[1] A number of his works in painting, sculpture, and architecture rank among the most famous in existence. His output in every field during his long life was prodigious; when the sheer volume of correspondence, sketches, and reminiscences that survive is also taken into account, he is the best-documented artist of the 16th century.

In his lifetime he was also often called Il Divino ("the divine one"). One of the qualities most admired by his contemporaries was his terribilità, a sense of awe-inspiring grandeur, and it was the attempts of subsequent artists to imitate Michelangelo's impassioned and highly personal style that resulted in Mannerism, the next major movement in Western art after the High Renaissance.

Got this e-book for my Amazon Kindle Fire HD. Very interested in Italian religious art. The book is not long and information in it is basic and by no means comprehensive. However, that's not the reason for the 1 Star rating. If I could have given it less than 1 star I would have. Here is the reason why: There are no illustrations in the book! Imagine that! Works of art are discussed but not illustrated. Absurd! Ended up removing it from my device.

The Life of Michelangelo eBook John Symonds Reviews

Written 100 years ago, it is a very detailed study of the life of Michelangelo. Scholarly, precise, insightful; and comparative with former biographers who actually knew the master. Not for the novice reader.
Not what I expected. Author is full of himself.
A veritable fountain of information about the minutia of the life and times of Michelangelo. Tremendous work worthy of your time.
Purchased before a trip to Tuscany, I read this book on airplanes and in Hotel rooms as I traveled to and stayed in Florence. Good thing, as I might not have finished it for pleasure. Difficult slogging at times, fascinating at times, and easy reading at times. Glad I read it as it made much of the art and places, as well as the historical interactions with the Medici Family clear and germane.
Symonds expresses the life of Michelangelo with clarity and loving insight. I enjoyed his method of biographical reportage, albeit sometimes TMI, so it slogged in part. However, the overall impact more than makes up for it. Symonds illuminates this unparalleled genius in such a way as to reveal why Michelangelo is exactly that.
When I ordered this book, I didn't realize it was published by Services. It is an insult to book publishing. Not only are there no images, there is no introduction, no index, the type face is small and faint. It looks like a student manuscript, just the text running along. This kind of "thing" takes the pleasure out of reading.
This biography tells you everything there is to know about Michelangelo - and more, if possible. The author must have scrutinized all extant archives, read and analyzed every letter, physically have spent time and meditated in the places where Michelagelo lived and worked. I will never look at a work by Michelangelo in the same way again. This is a great book. Read it.
